PVP vs. the Residents of South Oxnard

Now How do we keep the Wetlands safe and secure?
---Why not build a giant parking lot for newly processed autos ...

Gel Help 4/15/01

Protestors, proponents and concerned citizens came to the
Oxnard City Council Chambers on Tuesday Sept. 17th to see what the City Council would do regarding the proposal to add more parking space to the Pacific Vehicle Processing facility at the southern most landfall of Oxnard.

An attorney for the Sierra Club was heard during the public comments portion of the session as well as other concerned citizens. The attorney's main concern was the blatant fact that the City was about to review and possibly approve a major environmental nightmare without the full benefit and legal requirement of producing an EIR (Environmental Impact Report) which is required by law, by the Coastal Commission and least of all by the City of Oxnard....who's minding the mint?

With a sense of decency and to the dismay of the Suits who came to testify of how great this parking lot for PVP was, the City Council tabled any action or discussion on Item K.2 Planning and Zoning Permit Numbers 02-500-9 (Special Use Permit) and 02-620-2 (General Plan Amendment). Filed by Pacific Vehicle Processors.

Council Agenda added: Appeal filed by Earth Alert, Beacon Foundation, Sierra Club, and Ventura CoastKeeper. Recommendation was to continue to October 1st meeting.

The Suits will be back to say how great this new application of asphalt to endangered wetlands is...and the beleaguered citizens who care will come out with their "Save the World--Earth First" speeches to influence the Council in which direction it should go - that of More Business and Development or possibly the preservation of 5% of the state of California's last remaining pristine and untouched wetlands.

If the Council is going to recommend a DEIR/EIR, then we as citizens will be all the better for it. If the Council ever decides to leave things as is and make the area a nature preserve, the the planet will be better for it.

However, it would be good to let us know before 1900hrs on 01 OCT 02.
